چکیده

BEM-FEM coupling is desirable for three-dimensional problems involving specific features such as (i) large or unbounded media with linear constitutive properties, (ii) cracks, (iii) critical parts of complex geometry requiring accurate stress analyses. However, for cases with a BEM discretization involving a large number NBEM of degrees of freedom, setting up the BEM contribution to the coupled problem using conventional techniques is an expensive O(N BEM) task. Moreover, the fully-populated BEM block entails a O(N BEM) storage requirement and a O(N 3 BEM) contribution to the solution time via usual direct solvers. To overcome these pitfalls, the BEM contribution is formulated using the fast multipole method (FMM) and the coupled equations are solved by means of an iterative GMRES solver. Both the storage requirements and the solution times are found to be close to O(NBEM). A preconditioner based on the sparse approximate inverse of the BEM block is shown to improve the convergence of the GMRES solver. Numerical examples involving NBEM = O(10 5 − 10) unknowns, run on a PC computer, are presented; they include the Eshelby inclusion (as a validation example), a many-inclusion configuration, and a dam structure.

A new fast multipole boundary element method for solving large-scale two-dimensional elastostatic problems

A new fast multipole boundary element method (BEM) is presented in this paper for large-scale analysis of two-dimensional (2-D) elastostatic problems based on the direct boundary integral equation (BIE) formulation. In this new formulation, the fundamental solution for 2-D elasticity is written in a complex form using the two complex potential functions in 2-D elasticity. In this way, the multi...

A fast multipole boundary element method for 2D multi-domain elastostatic problems based on a dual BIE formulation

A new fast multipole formulation for the hypersingular BIE (HBIE) for 2D elasticity is presented in this paper based on a complex-variable representation of the kernels, similar to the formulation developed earlier for the conventional BIE (CBIE). A dual BIE formulation using a linear combination of the developed CBIE and HBIE is applied to analyze multi-domain problems with thin inclusions or ...

A coupled ES-FEM and FM-BEM for structural acoustic problems

In this paper, a coupled numerical method of the edge-based smoothed finite element (ES-FEM) with the fast multipole BEM (FM-BEM) is proposed to analyze structural acoustic problems. The vibrating structure is modeled using the so-called ES-FEM-DSG3 method, where the 3-node linear triangle plate elements based on the Reissner–Mindlin plate theory with the discrete shear gap (DSG) technique for ...

Application of Multipole Expansions To Boundary Element Method

The Boundary Element Method (BEM) has long been considered to be a viable alternative to the Finite Element Method (FEM) for doing engineering analysis. The BEM reduces the dimensions of the problem by one and leads to smaller system of equations. One of the inherent limitations of the BEM has been the long time required for the solution of large problems. This makes the BEM prohibitively expen...

Stiffeners Mechanical Effect Analysis by Numerical Coupling

Given any structure, we seek to find the solution of mechanical problem as precisely and efficiently as possible. Within this condition, the BEM is robust and promising development, standing out in the analysis of cases with occurrence of large stress gradients, as in problems of fracture mechanics. Moreover, in BEM the modeling of infinite means is performed naturally, without the use of appro...
